BRITE Team Effectiveness Assessment

BRITE is how the system level gets measured

BRITE is the team-level counterpart to the Leadership Circle Profile, though it is built on a different model: the LCP measures individual leadership characteristics, while BRITE measures what emerges between people. It also pairs with collective Immunity to Change mapping when a team's data shows a pattern the team keeps recreating despite itself.

What it is

BRITE (Broad-based Roots Influencing Team Effectiveness) is a team assessment from Leadership Circle, built from research with 26,000 teams. It measures the team as a single unit, no mere aggregation of individual scores, across five elements: sharing mindsets, building the right structure, creating safety and cohesion, processing information, and producing results. Within each element it distinguishes energy generators (for instance, belief in team efficacy, or clear roles) from energy disruptors (for instance, silo mentality, unmanaged conflict, or a pleasing culture in which people only say what is acceptable). The output is a score per element and an overall effectiveness score benchmarked against the research base.

How it works

Every member of an intact team completes the survey individually, about 15 minutes each. The standard end-to-end timeline is between two to four weeks. A report can be produced reliably once 80 percent of members, including the team leader, have responded, and the assessment works for any team size at the same cost. The report then feeds a facilitated working session of [half a day to a day] in which the team interprets its own data: where energy flows and where it leaks, where members are clearly experiencing different teams, and what to test before we meet again. Re-running BRITE later measures whether anything really moved.

Who it is for

Intact leadership and management teams. Three situations keep recurring in my work at the moment. Teams absorbing merged mandates after restructuring, where two former teams answer the survey as one and the alignment data tells the real story. Research leadership groups where strong individual judgement coexists with weak collective decisions. And boards or senior teams in foundations and NGOs renegotiating what they exist to do.

What you get

The BRITE team report, the facilitated debrief session, and an agreed development focus with experiments the team owns. In longer engagements BRITE becomes the before-and-after measure around a systemic team coaching arc.

When I use it, when I don't

I use BRITE when an established team wants to understand why its collective performance lags its individual quality, and as the diagnostic spine of team coaching engagements, particularly where restructuring has changed what the team is for.

I don't use it with newly formed teams as they need other conversations before it needs measurement. I'm cautious in the acute phase of downsizing or change, when survey answers measure fear as much as team dynamics. And I don't use the results to evaluate the team leader; a report read as a verdict poisons the development conversation it was meant to open.

Case: A team of stars, underperforming the sum

Almost every leadership team I work with shares one feature: the individual quality is beyond question. The CVs are excellent. An   d many of these teams never add up to more than the sum of their parts: each member does good work toward their own unit's goals, while the collective goals sit with no one in particular. Meetings absorb energy instead of producing it. Decisions get revisited. Privately, everyone knows the team is the weakest unit in their working week.

Individual assessment cannot see this problem, because the problem lives between people. A team is a system, and what needs measuring is the quality of its interactions.

BRITE at a glance:

  • Format individual online survey, then facilitated team session(s)
  • Time 15 minutes per member; half-day to full day debrief; about 2-4 weeks end to end;
  • Output team report, facilitated debrief, development focus
  • Sharing individual responses are anonymised within the team report; open-text answers show unattributed
  • Credential I am a certified administrator and facilitator of the BRITE assessment
